What do you think of the ContiTouring Contact...

Hi,
What do you guys think of the ContiTouring Contact tires? I'm looking for something not too expensive in a 205-55/16 size and these seemed to fit the bill. On the TireRack website though, the consumer reviews aren't all that stellar. Are there any other tires that cost about the same that are better? Thanks a lot.

Alex

I'm happy with mine on my E420. I have only put about 1000 miles on them but they handle fine for my type of driving. They do seem to be a little noisy but not a disturbing noise. I think a good value for the price.

My brother has them on his w124 on clk wheels in the exact size. I think that they ride very good.

I had to replace several sets on 2000 and newer S Class cars with relatively low miles. They were horribly noisy, like semi tires whining.

Gilly

PS I'd go with Michelin MXV4's

gilly, it could be possible that the S class had a different size, and most likely a higher load rating so the tire probably was a lot stiffer to handle the load from the S class. I was just in my brothers car on the freeway and they are quiet and good riding. The pilot alpins are very loud though.

The size I had in mind were 225/60 R 16 98H.
I'm not saying they were "bad" tires realy, but we had this particular noise problems on the S Class. I do know of others who swear by them.

They're more expensive, but the Dunlop SP5000's do pretty well as a double-duty sport/touring tire. Very quiet (even when all the way worn), excellent wet traction, although the softer tread compound meant I had to rotate them religiously every 6000 miles thanks to all the medium speed right handers I do on my commute. My first pair lasted about 45k mi over 2 years... if the A2's are anything like the SP5000's, they might be worth a look at that price point.

Conti Touring

I have the Dunlop Sport A2 on my C230 (205/55/16) and have liked them from the aspect of traction in all conditions dry, wet & snow. They have not provided anywhere near the 50K treadwear warranty though. I am at 15.5K and 1/32 from the wearbars all the way around. They seam to be getting very noisy as they wear and there is at least one that is making a thumping sound but no visable lumps or unusual wear.
I put a set (205/60/15) on my 300E about 3K miles ago and no complaints there (yet). I too was considering the Conti Touring.

I had them on my 16's, agfter roughly 20k miles, they were very worn.

They did not handle great and were noisy for me.

When I got my 17's, I went with kumho ecsta supra 712 tires, couldn't be happier with them so far.

Been almost a year since I got them, and like them.

DMarble,

Are your alignment settings ok? Going through a set of tires in 15,000 miles is astonishingly fast, unless you're running very soft rubber or do a lot of track work. Neither of which should be the case with an H-rated tire.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'll go to Tire Rack and take a look.

Oh, one thing about the Dunlops - they tend to slip a lot when driving over wet metal. Manhole covers, train tracks, be prepared for some wheelspin/sideways movement. Not a ton, but more than other tires I've driven, and enough to cause some raised eyebrows the first couple times. I think it's the tread pattern.

Otherwise, they're GREAT in the rain.
