Man on a budget would like recommendations for tires for his 560SL. Am more concerned with comfort and quiet than with dislodging dash dust when going around cloverleafs. I drive like an old man, I guess, but would like a tire that is smooth, quiet, tracks well, and will feel good on this car.
Thanks in advance for your input, everyone. ------------------ Tom '87 560 SL '74 MGB |

Tom, this isn't a real reply, but your question sounds similar to mine a few posts back. I drive a '85 300SD, with +2 size 215/70 fitted. Wondering if the 195/70 "factory" size is better, or if +2 makes sense.
With a diesel I don't expect earth-shattering performance, and I AM an "old man" at 50+. I'd wonder if Michelin MXV4 would be the "best bet" or if something else would be more bang for the buck. I STRONGLY encourage you to check out Toyos...they're the best kept secret in tires. My brother-in-law has gotten 75k miles out of each of two sets of Proxes H4 205/60-15s on his '88 300TE. The H4's a perfect match for you, based on your posted requirements. He's extremely pleased, and I've run the same tires myself on a Honda Accord (went thru 3 sets of 'em...used to drive a lot).
Good luck! ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E, Almandine Red, 17x8.5" AMG Sport rims '88 300TE, Arctic White, 16x7.5" Mille Miglia E420/430 replica rims |

For a man on a budget, the tires you should consider the Continental CH95 Eco+ ($58.00 ea.) or the better choice would be the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus ($117.00 ea.) The Michelin is more costly but is does offer a better ride quality.

Luke,
If I go with the Michelin (which I think I'd like to)...what size should I go with for the smoothest, most comfortable ride? I drive fairly conservatively and just want a tire that will track well and handle ok... that is, no 80 mph cloverleafs. Thanks in advance for your advice, and thanks for doing this VERY helpful forum. ------------------ Tom '87 560 SL |
