Totally Confused, Help Tire Rub

Guys I've done what so many you have with your 124 cars, upgrade to 16in wheels and 205/55/16 tires, my is 1992-400E.
My wheels are the E 2000 MB, 7 1/2 x 16 wheels, got the idea for these wheels from the Star, Fletcher Jones Motor Cars add. I originally had Dunlop's 9000 tires 205/55/16’s never notice any rubbing. Late last Fall I got Mich A/S Sport’s tires-205/55/16Z, only ran them about 500 miles before putting on my (Christmas gift) Dunlop Winter Sport 205/60/15H.
I just noticed I have a tire rub on the front fender (back opening) on the urethane lower panel, it is wearing a spot about an inch 1-1/2 down from the top of the molding, on the inside lip. I don't understand why it's rubbing now or which setup is rubbing-or is both? The Mich tires are mounted, and the fit looks very good, there is approximately an inch 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 space between the tire and the fender panel where its rubbing, I'm really darn confused, any ideas???

Thanks, enjoyd your drive, timreid

Hi tim

According to the tire size calculator, your 16's are only 0.2 " taller than your 15's.

If the marks were not left by your 15's, you may want to check by turning your 16's to full steering lock & bouncing the front of the car.

Manny Thanks, I went out and tried your suggested test, also I have an advantage of being 25lbs over weight. When I turn the wheels full turn, there’s a four finger space between the tire and wear spot on the fender, bounce/shake tire would never rub. When the tire is dead center straight, there a two-finger space did the test and I could not get the tire to rub. I’m confused, I going to try and find the Mich and Dunlop actual measurements.
Enjoy your drive, timreid

I forgot to mention the wheels ET.

The MB wheels are 16- 7 1/2w- ET41 with Dunlop winter Sport 205/60/15

The 5 hole replica from Tire Rack are
15- 7w- ET37 with Mich A/S Sport 205/55/16

enjoy your drive , timreid

Therein lies your problem.
Join a fitness club, & no more rubbing.

When the tire is straight is the wheel centered in the wheel well? Stand back and take a look. If the wheel is centered more to the back of the car then you'll need to check the alignment and get that wheel centered correctly.

I had some good advice today that suggested that I check my 400E's ride height. Does anybody have the specifications, and how to check the ride height for a 92-400E?

Thanks, enjoy your drive, timreid

Luke as you mention look at the obvious, and look at the not so obvious (what’s new, changed, happen), well looking at the obvious (worn parts, etc.) gave no answers. I put masking tape on the rub area, drove a few days and no rub. But then, I remembered I had a vibration, the dealer finally found the cause, bad rear frame mounts, and the not so obvious became obvious. The dealer tried different wheels/tires to completely eliminate that as the source of vibration, and the wheels/tires they used were a little to large, the rub.
Hey Luke, Thanks, enjoy your drive, timreid
