What wheel is this?
Fella's, please help me out here.
Do you recognize this wheel? I'm trying to find out what the name/model is (in the MB-catalogue) Thanks!

That is the OEM 15 hole alloy wheel from the mid 80's. I think they were called the W-7's

I could be wrong but it looks more like the 15 hole wheel for 90s SL (129 and others). What size do you need and what car is it going on to?
80s wheels are typically 15" and 90s wheels are 16" with different offsets.

It also looks like the stock wheel on our '91 W201. Hopefully you have more than this pic to go by for id.

It looks exactly like my wheels from my 1990 300E....the '86-'89 300E wheels had oval holes, the '90-'93 had the more rectangular ones. -- Mike

You can tell more from the numbers on the back side. Looke for a string like 6,5J15H2 ET34. The wheel diameter is between the J and the H. It'll be 14 (early 201), 15 (late 201, 124, 126) or 16 (129). If it's a factory MB wheel, it'll have a part number like 124 400 0204. The first 3 digits tell you what series it was intended for (201, 124, 126, 129).
AFAIK, only 126s came with oval wheels. I've only seen oval wheels with 21,5 and 25 mm offset which only came on 126s. It might help Vronsky if someone knows the option code for this style of wheel. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD Last edited by sixto; 06-02-2003 at 07:16 PM. |

Wheel type
Difficult to tell from such a square-on pic but it looks like a W124 Sportline wheel. I have a set on our 300TE and they have the squarish shaped holes rather than the oval holes of the standard W124 wheel. If it is a W124 Sportline wheel it will be 7Jx15H2ET41 (part no. 1244010902). The standard (15 hole) W124 wheel was a 6.5Jx15H2ET49. The standard 6" W201 wheel also had square shaped holes whereas the W201 Sportline 7" had the oval shaped holes, as did the late 107/126 wheel. The early 24 valve W124 also had a wheel with the square holes but it was still 6.5" rather than 7" like the Sportline wheel. All very confusing. It is the appearance of the depth of the rim that leads me to believe it is the W124 Sportline wheel.

Many thanks guys. Found out the id-number, its:
6.5J x 15h2 et49 so it's the standard W124 wheel. Found these -4- wheels for sale on the internet (USD 110 & winter tyres), really like the design, now I know they'll fit my W124. Cheers!

Note that the factory wheel was forged and there may be replicas being sold on the internet.

It is my understanding that factory wheels moved from forged to cast, on the same 15" 15 hole design. I think this happened in 90 or 91. My 86 has the forged wheels. My 92 has the Cast wheels. The cast ones look almost identical, have same offset, have same length bolts but have are beefier and have taller heads on the lug bolts. I have three sets of Cast and one of Forged. All are MB OE parts.
Replacement 15" 15 hole 6.5" wheels can be had for a pittance on eBay.

Agree. The early 124 wheels are forged, and they are distiguishable by the shape of the cooling holes. I agree with Mike's decription of the cooling holes as oval (like an "oval" racetrack.) It's tough to describe without a side by side comparison, but the wheel in the picture is a later cast wheel.
The early forged 124 wheels are p/n 124 400 1802, and I recall that the cast wheels replaced the forged wheels as early as '89, but I'll take Mike's word that it was '90. The p/n is on a pad similar to the pad that contains the dimensional data on the inside face of the wheel. 124 wheels with 205/55R-15 tires are an excellent upgrade for the 201. They have the same offset as the 6" 201 wheels - 49mm, and this combination fills up the wheelwells nicely in addition to provided crisper steering response and more grip, but at the expense of some additional ride harshness over the OEM tires. Wheels, sizes and part numbers
This has all raised an interesting topic regarding the variety of wheels available in more recent times. The early 14" alloys from the '70s came in only two widths and one offset (I think). With the introduction of the "flatter" style, 15", 15-hole wheel, a variety of widths an offsets became available. Even more recently with 16" and larger wheels in a greater variety of styles the range of MB wheels has become huge.
For the benefit of others, I will start a list of the wheels I have information on. Please verify details as these are only to the best of my knowledge. Others may wish to add to the list (and correct any errors) which hopefully could become a useful database.
