Yeah, the French will have to start offering rebates and everything else if they want to sell to folks in the US.

They really need the business too since exports to Iraq made up more than 20% of their GDP.

For me, thank you no, I won't be buying any more French products.

Have a great day,

I'm with Larry on this one. Good thing all my cars have tires less than a year old, so they'll be able to last a while.

Larry, I already know I hate Continental Conti Touring Contacts because the E300 came with them. And the Goodyear Eagle LS on the Jetta get very noisy as they wear. So what do you think about Bridgestones? Any other recommendations?

The french

Thanks for the heads up on the Costco rebate. The Michelin Energy MXV4s were a great improvement over the Pirellis on my SL. May be time to go with the Energies on my 300D.

The hatred directed at the French is starting to bore me especially in so called technical auto discussions. Anti american Europeans are not only in France, there are tons of them in Germany too. If the French are such loosers why worry about them. Punish the French forgive the Germans?

Larry I really do appreciate your help in the past with some of my car problems but I just couldn't keep quiet on this one. I hope i can continue to look forward to reading you when i post a car problem.

I Think the French have received more bad press, particularly as of late with the whoel Iraq situation.

OTOH, there may be no rational explanation...I boycott Japanese products 'cause of stuff that they did almost 60 years ago and yet I own a German car, and the Germans committed acts considered by many to be even more heinous in that timeframe (OTOH, the Germans were at the time controlled by a small group {Hitler, Himmler, Goering, etc} who have since been denounced by the majority of Germans, while AFAIK no denouncement has occured in Japan, and I still have trouble stomaching cannibalism)...

As far as tires go, I haven't tried a set of their car tires yet, but I'm sold on Big-O's truck tires.

Rick,

I haven't been impressed by Bridgestones. Continentals have worked well for me as the Michelin replacement. What trouble did you have with Continentals?

Everyone,

I think the biggest part of my problem with the French is the attitude of the typical French person when I am in France. There are exceptions to all general statements such as I am about to make.

When I am in France, I see MANY people who have an attitude of extreme superiority. In their eyes, Americans are just a bunch of inbred hillbilly's. They seem to have forgotten that 100,000 Americans gave their lives to save the French peoples A$$&$. After all these Americans fought and died to save them, DeGaulle strolled in to take credit as if he whipped the Germans single handedly. Their leader, in my eyes, seems to reflect the attitude of the typical French citizen.

The typical German citizen on the other hand, tends to appreciate the Americans. When living in Germany over 30 years ago, I learned that the typical German did not like to discuss Hitler and the Third Reich because they were embarrassed about being taken in by him. The typical German citizen is law abiding and hard working, quite the opposite of the typical French citizen. In the case of Germany, their leader took the stand against the US for purely political reasons. I don't think that he reflects the attitude of the typical German citizen, at least those that I know.

If I NEVER go back to France it will be way too soon for me.

Have a great day,

Those Michelins probably aren't imported

Think twice before boycotting Michelin.

Those Michelins that you buy at Costco and Sam's are mose likely manufactured in the good 'ole US of A by hard working, blue collar American laborers.

Michelin, North America (http://careers.michelin-us.com/frameset.htm?meet_mna_bottom.htm) employs 23,000 people in 18 plants and 25 distribution centers.

State-of-the-art research and development is performed in the US as well.

The problem I had with the ContiTouring Contacts was poor wet traction. Florida calls itself the sunshine state, but during the summer it rains every afternoon at 4:00. That means I'm driving home in rush hour nearly every day on wet roads. And the Conti's were never good at it.
