Question '81 300D Brake question

i was replacing the front brake pads on my '81 300D and discovered quite a bit of corrosion on the sheet metal parts that the pads mount next to. I think this will be more than a simple brake pad replacement, but what's next? I have a Haynes manual that gives sketchy brake rebuild info. Some technical assistance would be appreciated.

if I understand your post the sheet metal items you are referring to are shims which are used to reduce the possibility of pad noise .... you can easily clean them up with a wire brush ... I use the wire wheel on my bench grinder to clean up corroded metal like that ... it only takes a couple of extra minutes to do the job correctly
