Best dedicated winters for '95 E420
I have been researching Blizzacks, Nokian and Dunlop winter tires for my E420. Any others I should be looking at? Price is not a consideration, I just want the best winter tire. overall performance is not that big an issue either as I can live with more road noise in the winter, I am just looking for the best snow and ice traction for this car.
Thanks

You'll get dozens of different opinions on this. Some like Blizzaks, some Michelin Arctic Alpins or Pilot Alpins, some Nokian Hakkas, etc. etc.
I used Arctic Alpins for 4 seasons and they did a fine job here in the midwest. This year I switched to Nokian WRs, which as you know are not a dedicated winter tire but instead called an "all-weather" tire by Nokian. Said to be good for at least 35,000 miles. They have so far performed very well this season. We got our first snowfall this week and they handled it at least as well as the Arctic Alpins.

When I talked to my tirestore buddy, a few days ago, he said there is nothing like Bridgestone Blizzaks.
Btw. he sells Michelin, Bridgestone, etc.

I've just put a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta's on the wagon and I'll never go back to another tire. We just got hammered today with about 5" of really small particle, very slippery snow in 2.5 hours and the only thing doing better than me on the roads were very large SUVs. If you are concerned about safety - go with the Hakkas. The best snow tire on hills - period. I finally understand what they mean by self-cleaning tread. It sends a rooster tail of snow behind the car. I've owned Pirelli snows (OK) and Dunlop snows ( less than OK) and nothing comes close.

Blizzak WS-50s may be the best for snow and ice
I have the Pirelli Winter W210 SnowSports. They are "Performance Winter Tires". They were recommended and installed by the dealer and they seem to be well reviewed by consumers in the survey by Tirerack. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/winter.jsp
The Pirellis work pretty well in the snow, they seem to ride fine in the dry, and they are not too noisy. Next time, however, I may choose a more aggressive snow tire like the Blizzak WS-50. I really want to see how well my car does in the snow with the Blizzak WS-50s. I wonder if the Nokian Hakkapeliittas are as good as or any better than the Blizzak WS-50s, for all-out snow and ice performance. I DOUBT IT! It is hard to decide between all-out snow and ice performance or better ride and handling on dry roads. In Pennsylvania, winter roads are dry more often than they are covered with snow. Then again, when it snows, I want to have the best traction possible. The Michelin Arctic Alpine might be a good compromise, but I think they may be very similar to the Pirellis that I have now. Next time I am pretty sure I will go with the Blizzak WS-50s. In general, everyone seems to love Bridgestone tires for any application. I am also planning to switch to the Turanza LSH, from my Michelin MXV4s, for my summer tires.

for that car my vote would go with the Arctic Alpin .... the Blizzaks are amazing but, so flexible many Mercedes have had issues with them

I have used Nokian Hakka 1 tires >
in Boston on my wife's 300TE 4Matic 1991 and there was no amount of snow that ever fell when I could not get up the driveway (a steep curving hill) even before the snowplow came. The neighbors still talk about the time it snowed 18 inches and I left for skiing the next morning without any problem. Wear very well also - I put them on at Thanksgiving and take them off April 1 and they have lasted for three winters and will easily last a couple more.

You need a tire with the proper load rating for your car.
Also, I wouldn't go with anything but an H-rating or higher. I recommend the Dunlop WinterSport M2 or the Blizzak LM-22. Ihave used both and they are great.
