Stuck wheel bolts

Hello everyone,

I was trying to bleed my wife's bimmer brakes last night after i did the 300E with the help of some members here last week.

But i could not loose those wheel bolts. Today i brought the car back to the tire shop where i bought a set of new tires two weeks ago.

I told the owner the problem and he said, OK i can try to loose them for $20 and i am not responsible if the bolt breaks on me.
His reason is that those bolts are too old, (10 years from origin)and they got tightened more with the car running. Is it true? If yes, then how often should we change them?

TIA for your advice.

John

Take the guys impact wrench, turn it up to maximum force & then tighten his nuts with it.
Because that's what they did to you, when they installed your wheels the last time.

Do not ever let anyone use an air wrench on your lug nuts. Had a similar experience when I helped a friend replace his front brakes after he his tires rwere otated by a big name national shop. We finally get the nuts off after spraying with PB Blaster and using a 5 foot pipe over the lug wrench (I just happend to have the pipe in my garage). Suggest you spray teh nuts with a solvent (PB Blaster is very good) and get a long lever arm to fit over the wrench. Work slowly, i.e . apply force slowly. By the way, much has been writtten about overtighted lug nuts/bolts as the cause of warped rotors. Re-install lugs to factory specified torque.

regards,
Mark

Thank you all for the reply.

I finally took the car to the mechanic who used to service the car.
He loosed them without any problem and then put them back with a tool that limits the torque to 85 ft/lb.

He said the tire shop probably does not have a good air gun.

Wishing you and your family Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
