Widest tire on 1990 300 CE?

What is the widest tire that will fit on a 1990 300 CE with no mods to the wheelwells? I'm planning on upgrading and buying a rim and tire set and am thinking of 16" or 17".

from reading the various threads here about this subject, it seems that 225 is the widest.
