wagons and snows and handling

I put a set of dunlops (graspics) on my 84 wagon. Excellent in the mushy stuff, but on highway trips on dry pavement, I do not like the feel.

Should I drop a size down (60 or 55) to diminish the sidewall flex?

Anyone have any suggestions for size and or mfgr for a good snow for wagons that handles a bit stiffer?

get the saem size tire but, a high performance "H" rated winter tire or a larger diameter wheel with the standard winter tire type

either would achieve what you are looking for but the "H rated tire of the same size will not have as much snow and ice traction

Snows

Peter,

Have you tried the Nokian WRs? Unfortunately, Tire Rack doesn't (yet) carry them. These tires are quite good: They perform well in the dry, at highway speeds, handle reasonably well, and, importantly, have good grip in the snow. These all season tires are rated for "severe service" (the mountain and snowflake symbol), the only all season I know of with this rating. If you are looking for a snow tire that still handles well, these are worth trying.

I've ordered them from two great shops, that drop ship them to my favorite local tire installer: George at Meadowcreek tire in Denver (1.800.222.7360) and Dave at Waukegan Tire in IL (1-847.336.5305). They are both gentlemen and have fair prices.

Regards,
Bob

thanks!

Thanks Luke and Bob,

Both ideas are good ones. The Nokians are pricey, worth it from all I have read, and maybe the answer. I could also get some 15" rims from my techs and move up a tire size, hadn't thought of that.

Couldn't find an H-rated winter tire in the 195-70-14 size; did I search properly, Luke?

Have to plug the folks at Tirerack; have bought all my tires, probably going on six or seven sets for our family fleet, snows for three cars this year alone, and love the service and speed. One snag on one order for a friend. I am sure I will be back, even if I do go with some Nokians for the wagon.

Thanks again.
