'82 300D Tires Cupping

The fronnt tires on the '82 are cupping on the inside tread. Could this be just balancing or is there a more serious problem? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe

Imbalance alone will typically not cause this. This is most likely imbalance coupled with something else such as loose steering linkage parts, poor shocks and/or loose wheel bearings.

Additionally when you balance your tires MAKE SURE that they are dynamically balanced with weights on the inboard AND outboard of your wheels. Many stores won't do this for fear of scratching the wheels. If you DON'T balance them properly, you have about a 95% guarantee of vibration.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Larry,

I will get the tires balanced today. they are both cupping in the same areas maybe not only balancing but alignment also?.

I need to take care of these items this week as my son is home on spring break. We did the front brakes yesterday, and will do the fuel filters today.

Thanks again,

Joe

If both of them are cupping, you need to inspect all of your steering linkage parts including tie rod ends, drag link ends, idler arm bushings and steering box. It sounds like there is loosening coupled with imbalance. Just raise the car safely and push, pull, pry and prod on all these components to find the loose culprit(s.)

Good luck,
