My vote is for Michelins. I have X-Ones on the 300D and Radial Xs on the wagon. Rock steady at anything up to transsonic.

Ones to avoid IMHO? Kumho Advantage ...impossible to balance properly.

My 240D (115 chassis) has Continentals that are also working very well. But, the PO installed those and I know nothing about those tires.

not sure about availability in your area, but i am a great fan of Cooper tires for longevity/good wet traction/low noise and reasonable prices.

Cooper tires are a northeast USA brand......good quality for a reasonable price.
That said, I have 2 300d vehicles in my family that each are shod with 205/ 70/14 Michelin X one tires. They are QUIET, handle well in the rain........and are reasonable in the snow. Remember, that these are NOT snowtires.
However, when I had the Black Bomber receive its four wheels balanced the other day at NTB, I was told that the Xone tires have been DISCONTINUED. S*IT! At least I had my mom purchase a spare (ie; fifth) when she bought her set. Thus, if one becomes damaged by my dad smacking into something. There is a SPARE that matches.
However, what would be the replacement to the Xone in the current Michelin lineup?
Others have posted about the quality of the Yokahama Avid Touring tires. I have no first hand experience with these.

I have had nothing but good luck with Kumho tires, whereas I have disliked pretty much every Michelin I have owned. I guess it really boils down to the particular model. I have had OK luck with Pirelli. I run Ecsta Supra 711's on my Volvo, and they are far and away the best super high performance tire for the money. My fiance has Kumho Ecsta HP4 716's on her BWM 325 and they are an excellent tire, as well. I have not tried their Advantage tires, but from what R Leo says, I will probably avoid them. I run 205-55/16 Continental ContiTouringContact CH95's on my '82 300CD because they were on the wheels I bought, and I am happy with them. However, if I were to replace them I will probably go with Kumhos when it's time to replace them.

Good luck.

The Yokohama Avid V4S's I just got for my SDL are great. I've only had them on a few days but my first impressions are, that there very quit, have tons of grip(like I need it), look cool and seem to be very responsive. I've had them up to 90 without any vibrations, when it rains I'll tell you how they do. My only complaint is that there directional so I'm only going to be able to rotate them front to back. I got them on Tirerack for $96 each, there V rated and have a cool looking tread!

I had a Pirelli tire and the belt slipped. Pirelli distributor would do nothing for me in the way of replacing the tire, even on a prorated basis.

Michilin would not replace a brand new tire that blew out.

So I vote against Pirelli and Michilin.

I've had Cooper tires and never had any trouble.

I just had 4 Yokohama Avid touring tires put on my 300D. Although, probably not the high performance tire you are looking for, they do come with an 80,000 mile warranty. They have been on for about 1000 miles and my only complaint would be that I can really feel the grooves of some highways. I have gotten up to 100mph with these on and felt confident. You can also get them for under 300 bucks installed. Yes I am a cheapskate, but I don't just get the least expensive thing out there. Good luck.

My vote is for either Michelin MXV4's or X-ones.

The MXV4's hold the cars weight properly, and handle sharply. They ride well, and have low raod noise levels.

Once my MXV4's were worn out, I settled for X-ones simply because I needed tires asap and every tire shop in my area had to special order MXV4's to accomodate for the 14" wheels on my 300DT.

The X-ones ride just as well, smooth and relatively quietly, BUT they dont handle as well in turns and lend to more wandering on banks and curves on highways. With a little adjustment in driving style Ive managed to do quite well with them. Next time I need tires Im holding out for MXV4's. X-ones are very good though.

If ya'all liked the NLA X-One, give the Harmony a shot...after reading reviews at the TireRack, I
put a set on my 123, and am very impressed. Michelin has yet to disappoint me...(now the balancing
skills of the installer, that's another story...)

I just got a set of 205/70/14's Kuhmo 795's for $230 out the door localy. I put 300 miles on them yesterday, interstate, around town, and interstate in a good rain on the way home. I'm completly satisfied as of right now. Smooth as you could ask at a solid 90mph with the (aftermarket!) cruise set on I-40. There as good as any big name tire I've ever used.

kumho

new kumho ecstas on my sdl... great so far... no balance probs and nice quiet ride. much better control than the goodyear craptastic specials the p.o. had on her... we'll see how long they last- but for the price I can buy them almost 3 times before I'm as deep as one set of michelins- I doubt that will be neccessary!

I got 5 Pirelli

I got 4 Pirellis 90% tire wear left and a brand new matching spare mounted on the rims for $9.99 plus a few dollar core charge per alum mag $3 I think. From a pick-n-pull sale I have got tires 3 times now from pick-n-pull sale weekend if there’s one by you should really go look tomorrow it is the last day of the sales and we just don’t use poplar tire sizes with the junk yard crowd.

To all,

Instead of sending your money thru Michilin to France who doesn't support the USA, why don't you buy American made tires?

THe job you save may be your own.
