stripping original rims

I have a 1987 300D and my rims need refinishing. My question is if I strip the paint off, can I polish the aluminum and clear coat it or is the metal not smooth enough to be polished. If it is what type of stripper would not damage the metal?

On my 85 300D (painted rim) I used a couple cans each of Gunk and Jasco Epoxy Paint remover. Multiple applications, time, water, plastic scrappers and a disposable bottle brush help. Coat tire with vasoline to help keep residue off rubber.

I do not remember the Jasco discoloring the metal although this was not of major concern as my rims were intended to have a paint finish.

You could test an area on the inside of one of the rims to confirm results.
