I have the stock wheels from a 190x. They are chipped and scratched to heck, but I think they look much better than the stock W123 wheels.

I just had to move on really..
my dad likes to drive my car from time to time when he visits me ... and the 123 coupe really isn't the kind of car he enjoys driving, plus the car was becoming an obsession. Problem is, the E420 is becoming one too, not as much as the 123 Coupe though. It's just not as charming. but yeah... the E420 is so bland compared to the CD.. and it doesn't get nowhere near as many smiles and compliments from people. Anyway, I am glad it went to Rich! I can't wait to see it again.. at the next new England GTG? (If it ever happens) Thanks everyone,

I have the bundt cake wheels, but had them super polished. When cleaned really well they look like chrome (but without the chrome flaking problems).

Considering that I LOVE the bundts, Ive always had the thought of refinshing mine. I LOVE them in chrome, but dont want to deal with the unavoidable flaking which occured on my C280. I like the polished look, have seen a few with polished bundts. What is the process of polishing them? Who does it? I was quoted a price of $150.00 to have all 4 of my bundts refinished, in the proper MB color with 2 clear coats, which is a great price. Id assume having them polished wil be more.

I have a set of the old BBS "Mesh" style wheels on my 1985 280te. They're 14's, but these wheels look great on the w123's. I have to find a set of BBS centercaps, as the Mercedes centercaps will only fit on the rear wheels .
I was going to have my Bundt's polished or repainted, but these wheels came along for free, so I put them on instead. |

i like those wheels, my neighbor has a diamond blue 300DT that he never drives, keeps in pristine shape, and it has those wheels in 15" diameter with gold spokes. They look sharp!

Casey: I would love to find a set of BBS style wheels like those for my car someday. Any idea what they're called or how I might go about searching for some?

Hello-
I'm really not sure what these wheels are called... I looked for a set of these for about 3 months, and then one day while getting parts at my local "Pull-a-part" I saw a bright green 1978 300d with these wheels on them, so I snatched them. Check www.ebay.de for them- I've seen a few sets of these same wheels there, one of them ending for just €5. I figured that if you can find someone in Germany who speaks english and is willing to ship the wheels to the US, you can find a set of these wheels for €50 at the most, and have them shipped for a price of probably €150 (€200 all together, which would be about $245, also roughly what you would end up paying for a nice set of wheels+shipping in the US) . If you look for these on ebay- I would just search "Mercedes BBS Alufelgen" Rial(?) makes a very similar wheel to these and is very common in Germany, if you can't find the BBS's. Hope this helps |

Ronal also makes wheels that look identical, aswell as ACT.

Nate,
That is a great price and I would check on the quality of the job. I paid $300 for the set on mine and they come with NO clear coat. The wheel refinisher grinds off the existing paint first. The finisher used the term "grind" and I can see some slight imperfections near the ribs where it is virtually impossible to polish perfectly. The finisher then goes through a series of increasingly finer polishing compound (rouge) until the alloy is super smooth. I wouldn't have the rims clear coated, I think it may detract from the final look. The clear coat will eventually flake off. I will say that polished rims take more effort to keep clean, chrome rims seem clean easier. However I will NEVER have to replace them again due to chrome flaking off. A proper chrome job is more money than polishing, almost double the price.

The place I had the wheel reapint quoted was at a local, but very prominent SL restoration company. The car is going into the shop to have bodywork done after I was backed into. Figured I may aswell have the wheels repainted. Got the quote and there ya go. why not. He did tell me that hed rather powder coat them, but having a limited budget Id rather just have them repainted, and considering I might change the wheels anyhow, why bother? So for now theyre gonna be painted. Im excited to get the car in, and see it completed. The shop does AMAZING body work, and the finishes come out better than factory.
