This may sound off the wall but: when I was tracking down a roof leak in an impossible Rube Goldberg roof, an old fart told me to lightly spray water on areas of concern and dust with flour. Any water running across the flour will leave a 'trail'. I have done this with double sided tape on cars with a lot less mess.
