I'm running 16x8 ET40 on my '87 300TD. No suspension issues, no body issues, 215 tires. I tried 225 tires and they were very close to the strut, depending on brand, your 17" rims will give you a little additional clearance from the strut but you will not be able to use clamp-on weights on the rim, no extra clearance there.
