When I saw that statement I questioned it to myself... but did not have proof it was not true..
but what I do know in reading the FSM... is that most things in the engine compartment have at least three changes over their lifetime...
they just kept trying to improve them I guess...
or perhaps they did not know the meaning of ' leave well enough alone '...
