I seem to recall that the first 300 series cars to go "automatic" used a GM 4-spd hydramatic, not the ubiquitous Borg Warner 3 speed.
Am I wrong about that?

On the subject of rear mounted AC systems, a common "boot" air unit installed on luxury euro cars in the 1950s and early 60s was a Chrysler Airtemp design. Rolls Royce used them for notheast delivery cars in the late 1950s until they developed their own "enhanced capacity" unit in late 1958. Their first foray into air conditioning in 1956 was a disaster...The units were wholly unsuitable for use in seriously hot climates. I believe Jaguar also used the Chrysler units.
A Texas company also designed a rear unit for the Rolls Royce Silver Clouds that were delivered to the West Coast...
