I would guess if you do plan on running non road diesel of any sort an aux tank not in plain site would be a good idea. I wonder what local laws are on any of this, like search and siezure related laws. Would they need a warrant to dip your tank as they need with a search if you say no? What about looking for another tank in your trunk? All thoughts I'll probably never have to worry about but I am curious.
