Post Crown Wheel & Pinion

I stopped by an old VW Parts /enthusiast / nutter buddy to - day, we settled into chairs under the leafy tree over his private air cooled VW junkyard and began chatting .

He's a parts guy with more old books than I ever remember , I'm a VW Mechanic who assembled many cars out of parts .

Anyways, we had a long and interesting chat about VW transxales and ring gears & ratios...

*IF* your race car has a VW R & P you're in fine shape, you just need to make sure and begin the search .

FWIW, old Porsche 356's used the same VW R & P, the new ones out of Mexico are nitrided to make them stronger .

Back in the 1960's Hot Rods didn't worry so much about proper tooth contact because they'd swap gears a lot trying to find that 'perfect' ratio and unless you pre loaded the tooth contact it'd last a long time if noisily before going kaput .
