You should be ok with the 235/50 if your wheel offset is ET25 or higher. I ran 245/45-16 on my W126 on 8" rim with ET20 without any rubbing. Having said that I would think installing higher performance tires in 225/55 size will give you the performance you are looking for. Personally I am running 225/50-16 Yokohama ES100 with good results.
