Yeah, a bigger diesel tank would be nice...

But...I live in S Texas and my 50/50 blend starts up ok cold down to the 40's. Summer time is about 80'f low at night so I can probably go to 75% blend for the summer.

The super small diesel tank I'm planning would really only be needed for a morning start up if an extreme cold front comes through. Like once or twice a year.

Just make a one to three gallon diesel/BioD tank to fit under the hood or ???. Use OEM tank for WVO. Use the heated fuel pick up from Dana L. Scott in the OEM tank.

Make the tank Using what ever PVC tubing that wont react with diesel/BioD. Maybe 6 or 8" diameter? Smaller diamerter but odd shaped?

Heated WVO tank

I used to run my 300TD with a custom made 20 litre tank up front behind the left headlight. But I now have a 40 litre tank in place of the spare wheel. The coolant and fuel lines run from the engine bay, under the car (insulated and shielded with 38mm x 50mm steel channel), up through the floor under the back seat and up over the wheel arch to the tank. There is room under the plastic mouldings to hide all the pipework and cables. I made the tank from a section of 200 litre drum. It all fits neatly under the spare wheel cover. The spare now lives on the roof on a rack I made to clamp on the rails.

I've got a few pics if anyone is interested.

Andrew

Brilliant work! I would suggest re-thinking ditching the spare....Its sort of like a smoke detector or fire extinguisher....when you need it you NEED it....

Wow!!!

I am truly impressed! I never thought about fabricating a spare tire tank out of a steel drum like that. Thank you so much for the pictures and the great idea!

Spare wheel

I've converted two of these Mercs with the larger rear tank and I have kept the spare wheel in both cases. Although I note that new Mercs (especially the smaller ones) no longer come with spare wheels.

I may have been to the Infopop Biodiesel site a few times.

Just came across this outfit...

http://www.biofuels.ca/

They make what thhey call a "donut" tank that fits inside the spare wheel on a VW TDI. Looks like a good solution, but not sure it would work on a vertically-mounted spare as in our wagons.

tank in spare tire spot

One could make a neat canvas bag to put the spare tire in,and place it wherever is convient in the moment, even the roof rack when needed.
