Filtered, used motor oil & WVO

We've gone round and round on this before, but wondering (for the sake of recycling used motor oil) if the oil was filtered extremely well, if anyone burns 10% through their WVO as it's heated before being injected?

Thanks

Diesel Don

If you want to recycle your used motor oil, take it to the appropriate recycling facility. You don't want to burn it through your engine. Used motor oil contains lots of wear metal particulates that do VERY nasty things to injection pumps, injectors, valves, and cylinder walls.

Used motor oil is a very different animal from used cooking oil...

Choke that schoolbus behind you

Also burning used motor oil (as well as used ATF) releases very cancer causing particles.
"Back in the day" up north almost all automotive repair shops burned the used auto oil, & used tranny fluid to help heat the shop. After studies showed the link between this burning of auto fluids and cancer the practice was banned I think in the late 1970's
It must be something with low heat as incinerators are licensed to dispose of used auto fluids.

I filter my wvo very well, and run no more than 25%.Watf I run 50%,I only burn these fuels in winter because it stinks.Spring thru fall I run wvo at 50%.Yes I run my heaters with wmo/watf.

My local indy autoshop still uses WMO to heat it's shop. They are not a sketchy operation either.

If you looked at filtered WMO through an inspection microscope, you'd be horrified. Then see how many of those particles are metallic.

Maybe it really doesnt matter, but, I really wouldn't run them through my IP. And I say this as a WVO/homebrew bio user.

Short answer is yes. The long answer is if you filter the used motor oil down to 1micron you won't have any particulates in the oil that should cause any harm. But burning motor oil creates much more pollution out your tail pipe than other fuels. Think about how much smoke you get from burning motor oil that gets by the piston rings and valve seals. And if you start putting it in your fuel its gonna be smokey.

A heater is a very different device from an internal combustion engine. Plus those garage heaters are specifically designed for burning used motor oil. Most of the shops I know of use them as well. I still wouldn't put that crap into my engine, filtered or otherwise. You can take your used motor oil to just about any shop, quick-lube, or whatever and they will accept it for proper recycling. Burning it in your car does not make sense, and it produces a lot of really nasty pollution.

Diesel Don
Recycling WMO is the best way as it is blended into what we buy again. The oil companies have a lot of ways to make money off our back.

But if one insists to burn it then 10% blend with WVO should not be a problem as long as it is filtered well. If the mixing ratio with WVO ( or diesel ) is not too excessive, I suppose you can burn WMO, WATF, WPS fluid, WBrake fluid or any oil. Temperature is the key, even bitumen can be used to power diesel engine in ships. Burning WMO to heat a shop is different from burning it in a car as filtering is not critical, you only need a good supply of oxygen/air.

BTW, buring WMO produces more toxic gases.

Doesn't sound good to me. Between the acidity and abrasive metallic particles, it just doesn't seem like it'd work without damaging your engine. Not to mention the increased emissions and cancer possibility. I can't believe that you even generate enough WMO to make it worth it, unless you run a shop, in which case you should get the garage heater.

If this is true why do they still sell waste oil heating units for that very use ? If it was outlawed or banned I would not expect to see such devices so readly available ?

This story is in several threads already so I will try to shorten it. Dole, the Fruit Company tried mixing and burning waste Oil in their Diesel Generator Sets that run the Refer Units on Refrigerated Containers.

A white crusty residue started to plug up the Injectors on their Engines and the expense of repair got above the savings in burning the Waste Motor Oil.

Motor Oil has additives and such that are supposed to inhibit burning and are not in of themselve fuel; they can not be filtered out.

Well, FWIW, I've been burning a mix of 5% WMO, 15% Biodiesel, 80% #2 diesel for several thousand miles now. At 5% it doesn't even make any extra smoke.

Oil that gets past the rings is a liquid layer on the cylinder walls and therefore doesn't combust very well or very completely. That is why it makes smoke - the smoke is oil that didn't fully combust. Small quantities of oil mixed with fuel and sprayed through your injectors is atomized well enough to burn cleanly and doesn't cause excess smoke. Hell, diesel is just super thin motor oil to begin with.

The WMO I burn has been filtered to 1 micron, and it is only MY oil that has come from MY vehicles, so I know it doesn't have any solvents or other nasties in it. I figure I've already paid $12 a gallon for it so I might as well get the benefit of the BTUs out of burning it once it isn't suitable for lubrication anymore. Rather than give it to someone else so they can make a buck off of it.

I am in charge of what happens to the used oil from our state-wide fleet of vehicles where I work. I visit the oil recycler that our used oil goes to for an inspection every other year. I can tell you 100% for sure that a large portion of the oil that goes to recyclers gets filtered and treated and is then sold as furnace fuel. Most of the rest of it gets further refined and has its addatives replentished and then becomes recycled oil that can be re-sold and used again as engine oil.

Plus, my 95 did this by default once the oil aged and thinned. Man, the pipe fumes were noxious. Very un green man. Let them reconstitute the oil.

I have seen overhead heaters that burn used oil very cleanly. Not diesels.

Not being a serious Petrol Head...

Do Gasoline engine owners try to destroy their engines with Weird uses of what
common sense tells us is BAD ,both for motor and the Environment?

Or is the "Dead Skunk" Additive Affliction only a fetish of Some Diesel Owners?

You can tell none of these people are Pilots...
Or if they are They don't get the opportunity to screw around with their Avgas or JP for very long!
