Injector Return Lines. Biodiesel
During my Valve adjust today I noticed that my #5 injector return line is just staring to leak. Since I will be running B100 very soon(80 gallon batch curing as I type) I want to put viton on there and be done with it.
Does anyone know what the Inside diameter of the return lines between the injectors is? Also I noticed the ones on there dont use a clamp. If a hose material other than stock is used is a clamp required? Thanks, Stephen |
PSD,
If the new viton return line fits tight on the barbed nipple. it probably won't leak and won't need a clamp. You will just have to experiment with it. I don't know if you can find a clamp that small. Maybe you could twist a copper wire the viton as a clamp if it leaks. P E H |

Tony,
Good idea about the 2 wraps of the wire. Two heads are better then one. P E H |
Thank You
Thank you for the input. I will let you know how it goes!

also please let us know what i.d. viton you get to actually work! a couple of people on the biodiesel board have complained of not finding the exact size and having it come loose. wires should fix that, but still it would be nice to have a success story!

Viton hose with 1/8 in ID is equivalent to the 3.2mm hose MB uses. I am using hard walled Viton tubing of this size ordered from McMaster Carr (p/n 5119K11 $3.27 per ft.) and it fits perfectly without any clamp. I have not seen the slightest tendency for weeping, unlike factory web covered hose that I installed about 18 months ago on a 603 engine. I've always felt that the OE hose leaves something to be desired when it comes to longevity.
I even removed a Viton hose to take out an injector and reused the same hose without cutting it off, I simply pulled hard with needle nose pliers and it came off then I successfully reinstalled it on the injector and it doesn't leak! Don't try that with the OE web-covered hose! |

They make it easy to place an order on line. Its 1/8 I.D. hard Viton tubing (I don't recall seeing any soft Viton listed) |
I installed 1/8 ID - 1/4 OD firm Viton from McMaster Carr on our `87 300TD over two years ago and it`s doing fine, I believe it took a little over 2 feet. I have no concerns about it`s longjevity seeing the same material has been on both B100 burning TDIs for five years now without any issues.
