McNally

Hello,

His address is 160 LePage Court unit 29 near Keele and Finch in North York. If you're getting off the 401 go north on Keele and turn right on LePage court.

If the Oakville/Mississauga border isn't too far for you, give Andy at Clarkson Fine Cars a call. He's really good and has customers from all over the place. He's located at Southdown Road (Erin Mills) & QEW.

Tell him Neal with the black 300SDL and black 560SL sent you..

Neal

Excellent MB/older import mechanic in Vancouver B.C.

I've had excellent dealings with a backyard mechanic here in Vancouver. He's done a lot of engine and front-end work on my 1959 219 - he's turned this 45 year old car into a reliable daily driver.

His rates are reasonable and he knows what he's doing, he worked previous as a mechanic in the U.K.. I've seen some of the other work he's done, 70's and 80's MB's, including his own 60's fintail and a beautiful 60's Jag.

highly recomended

I've used Eurocars - 45 Algie Ave, Etobicoke. Small shop, owner Arthur Drozdz.416-621-8848. (near Ikea store on Queensway.

Arthur races motorcycles but also knows his MB and other euro car stuff. Not too expensive but as with many shops, he has trouble keeping his mechanics - he trains them and they move on.

Nevertheless, he has done good work for me including a major engine rebuild.

DISCOUNT PARTS IN Toronto, CANADA??

There are tons of on-line MB parts stores in the USA. In Canada, I only know of Netcomparts.com and they don't have everything.

More Lower Mainland info would be nice

Hi

New to this discussion board, and rather new to Mercedes (had a 190 for a few months and now have a 560 SEL).

There is a shop on 128th Street in Surrey, near 82 Avenue, called Goldstar. They claim to do only Mercedes work. It was suggested by BowWow.

I went to Goldstar (dropped in) to have them look at the rough-riding rear suspension on the 560 SEL. The shop was very helpful - without an appointment it immediately put my car up on the hoist, did a little road test, and then did a diagnosis (all of this at no charge). I found the guy (I think he was the owner or manager) to be rather friendly, in a German sort of way, and quite knowledgable. It appeared from my visit that it was a well run shop, clean, with good customer service. Just my impression from having lots of experience in shops (always as a customer, or as a relative hanging out at my uncle's shop when I was a kid)

Now, all that said, I didn't like his approach to repairing the car - although he might be 100% correct. He said that I should replace the actuators ($900 CDN for two, including labour) and that if that did not fix the problem, he would replace the shocks ($800 CDN, including labour), and then if that did not fix the problem ... and so on. I think that most of the high prices were mark-up on parts. I've always had a problem with "well, it might be this, so let's repair that ... but if it wasn't that then it might be this ... etc, etc". I never asked him what the cost would be if I supplied the parts (buying online is definitely cheaper).

Overall, however, my impression of the shop and him was quite favourable. I have a lot (a LOT!) of experience with shops for other brands of vehicles. I have bought at least two different cars every year for the past 35 years (most of them were used cars that were "new" to me). I had a gut feeling that this place might be a reasonably decent one. My other shops looked at the car and said "Mercedes? Forget it - won't touch them"

Anyway, I have also found a backyard mechanic (frankly, my absolute preference) in Richmond (on Blundell by # 4 Road). Lots of stuff does not require fancy shops. I am getting him to do some stuff and will let you know my experience.

If anyone knows some good backyard mechanics for Mercedes in the Lower Mainland, I would love to hear from you.

My rating of Goldstar without actually having any work done:
8.5 of 10

My rating of its approach to fixing my suspension problem:
6 of 10
(should be lower, but so many shops throw parts at problems it has become the norm).

I am still trying to educate myself about the 560's suspension abnormalities. I am thinking about having it switched to a conventional suspension system. The guy in Richmond will swap my springs and shocks for about $700 CDN. Has anyone ever had this done?

I hope to be able to add more later

edit to last message

are these things called actuators or accumulators? the things Mercedes has in the goofy self-leveling hydraulic rear suspension system for a 560 SEL
