Problem FM reception in Mercedes E300 TD 1998

Problem FM reception in 1998 Mercedes E300 TD Avantgarde (left hand drive). Has anybody any idea what could be causing erratic/poor reception ( can vary within one metre!!) on my FM radio. The MW/AM section also has weak reception. I have tried a number of radios that work well in other cars. I am in a strong reception area yet each radio displays the same symptoms. On which side of the car does the coaxial cable connect to the integrated aerial on the back window? Has the integrated aerial got an amplifier?

In order to diagnose what the problem is you need to do a few tests..First of all do you have AM reception...If you do that means that the antenna is OK. If you get no reception at all that means the antenna circuit is not working....If you get 2 or 3 stations on AM and no FM that means that the antenna circuit has some defect (bad ground, bad antenna amp) or that the FM circuit in the radio is toast. Usually when you get no FM either the antenna is completely shot or the FM section in the radio is shot.....
