radio/power problem

I put in an after market radio in my 1992 e190 2.3

for some reason if i turn on my headlights, or use the window switches, my radio seems to reset [turn off/on] which stops the cd playing, and it has to re read the whole cd etc.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix the issue?

Possible thoughts...voltage stabilizer but I'm not sure if that will remedy the issue.

I suspect that the circuit you have the yellow wire connected to is having the voltage drawn down too much causing the unit to shut itself down (protection) and giving you the subsequent results. There are actually 2 problems here....It sounds to me like your alternator should be checked as it is not charging the battery up to the required voltage. The alternative is to change the yellow wire to somewhere else in the car that does not have such a voltage drop when you turn on lights or the like...Make sure and check what voltage is at the yellow wire with the car running ....It should be around 13.6 volts...

you have the illumination wire hooked up to the wrong place ont he radio.

You need to check your wiring.

It is possible you hooked the ground up to the illumination wire that could cause it. be careful, you could blow the radio.

heres all the info I could find on your wiring:

Well see the wierd thing is, is that it works fine during the day, when less power is used. I'll still have a look at the wiring.

if you turn ont he headlights and the radio shuts off I suspect you have the illumination wire hooked up tot he ground. the illumination wire only comes on whent he lgiths are on.

I doubt it is a power drain issue.

Check over the wiring against the wiring info I gave you, and make sure you didn;t hook it up wrong.

I had installed a radio for a friend like 14 years ago, radio worked great, then he switched on the headlights, and radio fried..

Turned out I had hooked up what I thought was a ground tot he radio ground and it was actually the illumination wire.

This was back before we had a database of wiring diagrams for cars, and we had to test each wire with a test light and or multimeter.

I tested that wire with a test light, it showed no light, so I figured thats the ground. I hadn;t learned to test turning on the headlights at the time to test for an illumination wire.

Needless to say, it was the only time I ever made that mistake.

Check over the wiring, I'm sure you will find out what is the problem.

I also forgot to mention that when i use the power windows the radio also resets, I will be checking the system tommorrow if the weather turns out to be nice again...

Also, is the illumination the same as memory or is accessory the same as memory.

accessory is the ignition source.

Memory is a +12v constant source.

Illumination is a wire that has power only when the lgihts are turned on.

Have you checked the ground wires?

One of the wires to the becker that was attached tot he radio chassis was an alarm security wire.

Check over your wiring.

Also there should be a bunch of brown wires behind the radio screwed intot he body of the car. make sure those are not loose.

It is possible you have a short somewhere too.

after further investigation me and my roomate found that the ground wire was not connected , lukily nothing else was hurt. The system should work as stated above with no ground? Just wondering.

Well the question i was asking was, With the ground not hooked up, the radio will still work right?

It will just keep resetting when more power to the car is needed.

The reason i am asking is because I want to make sure that i fixed the problem...

the antenna does provide a bit of a ground signal, enough that most radios will turn on, but maybe not enough to keep the ground signal strong.

Some people also put a ground to the chassis of the radio too along with the normal ground wire.

Some radios have to be grounded on the radio chassis. (I.E. Some chrysler and dodge radios that are factory have grounds on the radio chassis, not the harness)

A Bad ground could potentially cause your problems, too much resistance maybe without a good ground.

If it seems to be ok now, then I wouldn;t worry about it unless it starts happening again.
