Upgrading inside speakers on a W124 300D

What are the sizes of the speakers on the dash and rear? Bestbuy.com shows my 3.5" for the front and 4" for the rear. The subs in the trunk just hit to hard even though i have the amp set to low and the deck is at -7 bass it still just hits so hard that i can hardly hear vocals and only hear bass and the "beat" of the song.

So i want to upgrade them and push them with an amp. Would i need a 4ch amp or would a 2ch work. I have a audiovox 4ch amp, Sony 2ch amp,and a lighting audio 2ch.

I know the speakers are connected to the switch on the center console. Not sure what its called but its what switches from the front to rear speakers. From what i remember when i installed the lanzar mp3 deck i only had connected 2 speakers to it.

Dont exactly know how the original owner had it connected, it did have a sony tape deck so i just cut the wires off the sony deck and connected them to the lanzar deck.

thanks

On my 95 - they were 4" front, 5.25" rear and front door.

Personally - if you have 4 speakers, I would use a 4 channel amp, or at least 2 2channel amps. Otherwise you will be very limited on how you can adjust balance between the speakers.

thanks,

I did a search and some reading and found this http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=134423&highlight=w124+5.25

Looked very interesting, i picked up some kickers 5.25 speakers at the flea market today for $40 (talked him down from $80) I asked him for speakers with the smallest magnets and he had a rockford fosgate and the kickers. But i went with the kickers because of bad experiance with rockford woofers a while back.

Going to try to fit the kickers tomorrow in the dash, but im also interested in putting the 5x7's in the rear but a custom bracket is something i may not be able to do, Did you have to custom fit the 5.25's in the rear or your 95 or thats what fits back there stock?

The 5.25"s (I used MB Quart) fit in my rear deck without custom brackets. I did have to grind out a little with my Dremel tool to get them to fit perfectly though. The other option was to build a bracket - and grinding out the area seemed easier to me. It wasn't much I had to cut out...

One note about that thread - I would never install an amplifier in the position noted by that thread. It is very risky - most of them need to be "right-side" up, or on their side to cool properly. Check your owners manual - some may be able to handle the heat like that - but I know mine had a big warning about it!

Also, be careful with the heavy rubber gasket around the rear speakers... after a couple weeks, the rubber somehow moved and rested on the speaker - caused a big buzzing (sounded like the speaker was blown). I had to go back in and secure the rubber gasket.
