Hirshmann Antenna problem

Interesting one.
The Antenna was unplugged at the multi pin power plug when we got the car and was in the half up position.
I reconnected it and it went down and refused to come back up....
After I did this, I mistakenly left the plug connected...
The car alarm went off and the battery went flat... several times!
I disconnected the alarm.
Battery still went flat!
Asked a buddy to look at the antenna... and took it out.
Car behaves fine... No battery issues..
I did not figure it out until he tested it and said it worked fine... I put it back in and it still did not go up... I left it connected and just as I was getting frustrated, I touched the body at the top of the plastic housing and it was really HOT!
I tested it with my IR temp sensor...reading was 150deg F...
I took off the power lead again.

Ok, so I took it apart and the electronics at the top are really hot.
I assume that the antenna is not shutting off at the down stop, and the motor and electronics are straining...
That is the reason the battery went flat!

Can it be fixed?
Ideas?

Merk, I think that the antenna motor has an automatic shut off.

I think that you have a short someplace in the motor and that is causing the overheating and other symptoms...have you taken the antenna motor apart?

If you ever come out to the Ventura area we can swap antenna motors and test yours out.

BTW, did the link I posted on the other thread help answer your fuel pump question? Your hot rough idle question?

I was just dealing with antenna problems the other day...though not what you are describing. It occurs to me that you might have an old piece of the flexible nylon geared line left inside the retraction reservoir and when your antenna tries to go down or up, it hangs up on the piece in the reservoir. If the motor "thinks" it hasn't reached the point for full extension or retraction, it will continue to push/pull against a heavy resistance...hence the heat. If you decide to check it out, removing the antenna motor and disassembling it aren't difficult. Just watch the little rubber bumpers that will come out when you disassemble. They tend to jump off their retainers on reassembly if you're not careful. The antenna motor housing can be unassembled by judicious use of a couple of small screw drivers.

LGB, thanks for the offer... plan to be in Simi to meet friends at some time in the next few weeks, and will steal the Benz from my son for that so we can grab coffee... he loves it so much, bribes will be needed I expect..

I took the cover off, and looked for bad connections etc, but I am not too electrical ... yet, so I thought I would ask here if anyone had experienced the same issue.
Monte, I will pull it apart and check that... the mast was replaced recently by the PO... I see the bill... So that maybe the answer!
Thanks!

I had similar problems and bought a new Hirschmann on e-bay from a guy in Georgia for around $30.00 with all wires, motor, and mast. I cant find the website , but his phone # is 770-781-5658. He stocks for mostly all Benzs and will even walk you through the simple install on the phone. Hope this helps.

Is that a store?

Xena, is that a store or was this a one-time type of deal? I have a friend who may need to replace her antennae. I assumed she would have to pay a lot more than $30.00 for one.

Thanks for posting the number.
