Help on a 1976 240D 115 Chassis

Hey guys...a quick thanks for all the help you provide. I just bought my new (old) mercedes a few months ago, and this forum has been extremely informative for a novice like myself.

I want to hear my own music in the car, but the original Becker radio is too cool to remove. I want to use an Ipod and FM transmitter so I can still enjoy the aesthetics of the Becker and the selection of my Ipod.

The original speaker system consists of 1 speaker centered in the dash. That is still original and is blown. I'm going to attach pictures later today. My questions are:

1) How do I change the speaker? What tools do I need?
2) What size/type should I use?
3) Are there other easy changes I can make (extra speakers) to enhance the sound quality in the car?
4) If I can't do it, do you know of any audio shops in the NC area (Charlotte) that do good work?

Thanks ahead of time for all the consideration. I really appreciate your responses.

G. Sac

Thumbs up

Pics would be very nice, not too many of us own 115s

Since it's a single, it's probably weird. I bet with some head scratching and fab you could install a pair of 3.5s or 4s up there to have stereo sound up there.

Is there a rear speaker?

Also, consider using something to convert the speaker outs on the headunit to a signal only so you could use a new amplifier. You'd have much more sound than the Becker could do.

If your Becker is a cassette model, I believe Becker of NA can convert it to have a line out for your MP3 device.

You want something like this.

It's from JC Whitney and they don't list one for a Mercedes but a custom installer should be able to make one or you could whip one up out of MDF.
