replace original unit with???
Folks. I'm thinking of replacing the original tape-deck unit in my 91 300SE with something that plays CDs. Current unit still works, its just that tapes are so lame in comparison to CD's!
Anyway, I'm not an audiophile, and I'm not looking to spend a lot. Just want something that will fit and work, and was wondering what people might suggest as a suitable CD player for this kind of car. Thanks! |
I don't think it matters. 99.9% of all aftermarket stereos are standard DIN chassis. They will all have the same wiring, which is a two-piece with plug and bare wires at the end that you must either splice into your car's stock harness or buy a vehicle specific harness and then splice the two harnesses together. Most will have pre-amp outputs for amps if you want. It's pretty much industy standard. The only desision is what brand & features you want.
You can buy a basic CD player for under $50 that will work fine. It might not much power or options or pre-amp outs or interval crossovers, sub out puts, or be MP3 compatible, or make coffee for you. But the cheapest CD player you can find will mount just fine and you can wire it up to pretty much any car. The trick is those cars with the stereo integrated into other electronics & systems. Or cars with built in amps or stereo controls on the steering wheel and such. Lots of those type cars might require custom harnesses or complete bypassing of the OEM stereo wiring. |
I think that 91 might have the two piece radio

Thanks for the tips. Just looking for a basic unit, so this info really gives me a lot of choices!
Thanks! |
Get something that you can plug your I Pod into. Forget about CD's that's so "last year." Or, better yet, get a Sirius radio. No matter what you like to listen to, they have plenty of it. Good sound quality, too.

Good idea Dee. Thanks!

PowerPig has a nice set up in his SEC. Search his threads under featured cars for pics and narrative info. Hitman X also seems pretty knowlwdgeable about all things audio.
