Unhappy New Stereo not working?

Hi I just got an Alpine CDA-9885 to replace my becker that came in my 1982 300D Turbodiesal. I pulled out the wires from the center console switch that controls where audio comes from and cut them apart so that all I had left was the 8 wires for the four speakers. Then I hooked up the power. The problem is I assumed that the black was the ground and the gray was the power when you turn the key. Apparently it was the opposite. I blew some fuses and replaced them but the problem still doesn't seem to be fixed. Also the lights on the air conditioner stopped working after the fuses blew. I am confused. I know I am getting juice because I rewired it and checked the wires with a light bulb. So why my radio is not turning on is a mystery. Also when I turn the key my car no longer starts and the radio makes a clicking sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way there are several models of the cda-9885 mine is the one with the four main buttons to the left of the volume nob.

Look on the rear of your radio, sometimes there are fuses back there near the plug. Also, check if you have any in line fuses on your radio wiring.
As to the car not starting, I don't have any idea on that one but make sure it's in park and that your battery isn't dead.

Also, you have to hook up the 12v+ memory wire for it to come on.

I'm guessing there are some more blown fuses that you haven't found yet.

By memory wire do you mean the one that gets juice only when the key is in the ignition? Also I checked the fuse in the back of the radio and it isn't blown.

Memory feed is 12 volt on at all times.

I second an overlooked fuse.

how did this turn out? Check the fuses in the car. You should really have a cheap multimeter, they are only like $10 and could save you a lot of money and headaches.
Did you ever figure out why your car won't start?
