W201, 84 190D, accessing speaker wiring
Here are some solutions I worked out on my 84, 190D 2.2. Mainly on how I located and used some of the original wiring to install a four channel AM/FM - CD player.
I did not install new speakers (at my age and hearing, the OEM stuff is adequate). I did discover some unique ways to pull some wire to the original speaker fader to access two of the four wires to complete the connecting of the front speakers. The rear speakers are pretty easy. This post is not to show 100% of the job, just some of the work-around's that made it come together. Wiring around the fader is a dickens. The fader plug needs pulled off and, after the proper two wires are identified and spliced, then it is stuffed forward towards the right. That should allow the wooden console cover to be snapped back in place. Do not re-connect the fader. A note concerning this old wiring -- the insulation stiffens with time. Cold temperatures make it almost impossible. A hair dryer used judiciously can simplify the job. Also a tool I made after a few hours made it much easier: I took an old icepick, heated the last 1/4-3/8's inch, bent it at 90 degrees into sort of a hook. That gadget is worth its weight in bubble gum for isolating and tugging on a wire to get some slack.
