radio codes

1991 300TE

do the radio codes go with the car or the radio?

I found a radio at a wrecking yard and if I replace it, is the start-up code the same one in my car or should I have gotten the VIN from the wreck?

Thanks in advance.

It stays with the radio. If the radio in the wrecked car was never replaced the code should be on file with MB and/or the radio mfr. If it was replaced at a dealer, the dealer should have gone the extra step to make sure the number was changed in Mercedes database, so even if the radio was replaced, MB should have the correct code on file.

You can try to see if the paperwork (code card) is in the car someplace, otherwise get the VIN number and ask a dealer to do a VMI for you and see if the code is on the VMI, it should be.

PS if you can't get the wrecked cars VIN, then the radio manufacturer should be able to ge tthe code for you based on the radio S/N

Generally the radio has a code based on the model and serial number. What are the model and serial number?

By having a dealer do a VMI on the car (VMI=Vehicle Master Inquiry), the VMI should list the code. If you have a freindly dealer they should do this for you gratis.
In the case of "the wrecked car" you would need the VIN of the donor vehicle.
In the case of not having access to the donor vehicle VIN, they would need to contact the warranty dept at the radio manufacturer, you might be able to do some of this online yourself.
