Hello,
I asked ten different people and I got 20 different answers.... can you guys review these and let me know if any of these are false? Thanks In a 2000 SLK230, 1. You cannot change out the head unit without replacing the entire stereo system because the outputs are fiber (on the head unit) 2. The MB head unit does not use RCA-type outs. 3. The amplifiers are proprietary (will not work with anything but the MB radio head unit) 4. You cannot replace the speakers in the doors because they are self-amplified. These answers are what I got in my research to upgrade my stereo in my SLK. Please! if any of these are wrong, please input! All I want to do is replace the speakers in the doors and a head unit with a cd player. No changer. Can I just pop open the grilles and replace the speaker? Will it work? Will an aftermarket head unit work with the existing amplifiers/speakers? Do I need any special line converters? Etc? Jay |

Jay,
From what I got from my friend(local Service Advisor for MB), your first question pretty much answered your following question.... Since the car is runned by fibre optical wires rather then copper wires, you have to redo the WHOLE thing if you want to upgrade the stereo.....besides, if you want to get the best performance out of the stereo, do it in whole may be better, NO?
