Becker 1432 questions

I recently got a 1992 300E with the 1432 radio. The head unit displays properly and the cassette player works, but I get no radio reception. The seek and scan functions find nothing, just endless searching. I can manually enter a known strong station but hear nothing. The antenna also does not go up when I turn the radio on.
Questions - Does the receiver control the antenna is it the power button on the h/u? How can I test the antenna? Should I be able to get some reception with it down? (I'm about 10-15 miles from Nashville)
All the cables to the receiver are plugged in. I replaced the spade fuse on the receiver. (It was missing when I got the car.)
I'm assuming that since the cassette part works, the amp is OK. That would make the receiver the problem. Are used ones available at a reasonable cost?
I'm not very audio-savvy and I do appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks-Ken

There is a switch in the center row of switches for the antenna, is the antenna turned on? Should be either in the middle or upper position, the lower position is off. The problem more than likely is the antenna not raising.

Gilly - Thanks for your input, but I have no antenna switch on the dash. I have 5 switches in the row you mentioned - rear window defrost, rear headrests, recirculate air, emergency flashers, and interior lights. My 126 had an antenna switch in that row. That's why I thought the radio controls the antenna.

By saying that the tape player works, do you mean you get sound out of it. If so, have you looked at the connection on the antenna itself. Often times the electrical connection is undone because there was a short in it that ran the battery done when the car was off.

If there is electricity at that connection then you need am ohm meter to ceck that there is signal coming from the antenna and if there is then check and see ifthere is signal at the back of the radio. Check the fuse at the back of the radio and on the amp in the trunk. I think on mine that rear amp has a plug in to make the antenna work so check that it is plugged in. Good luck. It wont be hard to find the problem but it just takes time. I would start at the amp in the trunk....

From my experience, the blue wire that is usually covered with a black sheath controls the antenna. On my radio it plugs in near the power on the back of the radio. Yours could be different with an amp. Just make sure the antenna turns off when you cut power, so it does not burn up the antenna.

You can Google beckernorthamerica and they have Picts of the back and wiring info

Tuner Problem

Ken1,

Do you still have or had a CD changer in the trunk?? If so you will need to change the wires on the tuner to bypass it. Let me know. Thank you for using the forum.
