Need speakers for 300SD

From what I can find thru online searching, the front dash speakers are some oddball size like 3.5x5.5 and not a normal 4x6.

Rear speakers seem like they might be the same but I'm not sure.

I've found someone that said Boston Acoustic makes drop-in replacements for the dash speakers but I can't seem to find any such thing on their site.

I really want to keep the speakers in their original locations.
I don't want to mount a component system with the tweeters mounted somewhere else either.

I just want to replace and upgrade the original POS speakers.

Best I can find so far is a couple people saying that 4" coaxials will fit pretty well into the dash locations...prolly goes for the rears as well.

I had Boston acoustic 5x7 in the dash of my 82sd. Sounded like crap. Never have liked thier speakers. Replaced them with Polk 5x7s bought used on ebay. Unbelievible difference! Going to find another pair of the same for the rear.

I take it you had to modify either the speaker or the dash in order to fit the 5x7 speakers in....

I want something that will drop in.

Hmm...I am getting a lot of conflicting info then.

I would guess that MB changed some things in one or more years.

If I could 'drop' 5x7's in, that'd be awesome. Guess I'll actually need to go out and check what I have myself.

On mine its very obvious, the grills are 5/7 size. I was confused when i wanted to replace them myself. The tech at Crutchfiels told me that this car used 3 1/2 or 4" round speakers. I would be interested in knowing what the deal is myself. Different interior package? Anybody out there know?

Ok...just went out and measured.

The max dimensions including the surround material and the frame material going around the surround is 3.75" x 6"

The measurements including just the cone and surround material is 3.25" x 5.5"

...and they look like $.38 POS little speakers....what a joke.

Picked up two sets of Boston Acoustic 746 4x6 plate speakers today.

After a quick eyeballing of fit, it looks like it will go in but I'll need to trim some of the plastic off of the speaker plate. Otherwise, the actual hole cutout and depth appear to be completely adequate as-is.

Your 82 sd has the same size openings, there has never been a 5x7 in the dash of a mercedes(either a 4 or a 4x6 ) I use a plate speaker lots to choose from and install it from underneath (no cutting). This is an older model eclipse speaker 4" point source.
