Replacing radio 77 240d

I want to replace the radio in my old 240d because it is fading out under bridges etc and I have never liked the controls.

A while back, I read the instructions on a Blaupunckt radio with CD player and it mentioned having to install a strap on the firewall inside the console to stabilize the CD player.

I have pulled out my old radio a couple of times so can see the available space for the new radio.

There is no way my hands will fit in there so was wondering how important that strap really is. Is there an alternative location for such a strap or an easy way to open up more space in that console for the installation? Thanks

The strap is not needed because there is some support of the stereo body along the side and bottom provided by the space M-B uses. A strap is a must for most stereo installations because the radio is mounted at the front with no side support (both DIN and old style with knobs). I used to install car stereos and I have done lots before becoming a manager - I saw lots of damaged stereo's because a strap on the back was not used. I did not use a strap to install my Alpine in my 300D which has the same body as yours, W123.

Good Luck!
Tom
