w123 radio install ideas
Looking to install a single din (sd / usb / BT) in factory location
and there are plenty of cheap options I've got a unit installed now hooked up to some blown Boston Acoustic drivers in the dash and it ain't cutting it at speed. The parcel shelf was in BAD shape so it will be replaced with some similar type material. I was thinking about some slim 3.5's in the dash and trying to squeeze some 6x9's in the parcel shelf area driven from the head unit into a small 4 channel amp under the driver seat. Since the new seat install with new mounts, I have plenty of room under the seat for a small 4 channel amp. |

Some owners are putting these in their W123s. https://www.amazon.com/VDO-Continental-TR7412UB-European-Bluetooth/dp/B08D2R48HZ

A lot nicer looking than the one's I was looking at. There was one on Fleabay that looked era specific and provided all the features I want but it's only on the UK / Euro sites. |

I'm fairly new to the W123 world, having purchased my 280CE in January. Since then, I've been really searching for ways to upgrade the sound. As you know, the stock speaker locations can be very challenging.
After months of searching for a solution, I finally found these: https://www.blam-audio.com/en/lfr80/ BLAM is a fairly new company started by the primary engineer behind Focal with the intent of making 'the French sound" more affordable. Bad name, great speakers. The BLAM LFR80 is a 3-inch, full-range driver that is small enough to fit in the stock front dash location and sits low enough that the stock grilles can be used. The installer made a small adapter for the speaker, but there was absolutely no cutting or modification of the car. These speakers are crazy-good and not just for their size. I highly recommend them. I currently have a JL MicroSub (Single 6W3v3 MicroSub) in the rear passenger floorboard powered by a small Kenwood KAC-M3001 amp mounted under the dash. This is temporary until I can find a long-term solution. As for the head unit, I have a Kenwood KMM-X704. It may be ugly, but it powers those speakers fairly well and it has built-in DSP. Even with the most basic settings, I was able to make the speakers "disappear". I have sent the original Becker Europa off to be modified with the Aurora Design FMR-2.8. It will look completely original, but it'll have Bluetooth, HD Radio, AM, FM, Digital Amps and Preamp Outputs. Ultimately, I want to have the highest sound quality without any visible modifications without spending more on the sound system than I paid for the car. |

installed the "new" parcel shelf last night.
used "hardboard" from local resources. insulation on bottom, carpet on top, looks much better First Aid kit was never there when I got the 300d as the PO took it out for a place for a sub. without the contour of the OEM piece, I lost some speaker clearance. Ordered some shallow Kenwood's 6.5's to see if they will fit. Stay tuned... |

The Kenwood 6.5's that I found fit good. Not as much room as I thought
but they went in without too much fuss. The issue is my cheap head unit can't drive them enough without breaking up so I got to swap in another radio to see if I can get away without having to install an amp. On another note, has anyone found a push button switch that will fit into the original fader location? |
