C230 speaker DIY article

I have just finished replacing the front door speakers on my w202 C230 (non bose). If there is interest, I can prepare a DIY article and pictures showing how a 6 1/2" premium speaker can fit in the stock 5 1/2" speaker frame with minimum modifications. If the interest is there Bill said he would add it to the DIY. So, fill out the poll and let me know if i should start scanning pics.

i have an E320 1994. w124 i think... would the install be the same? i'm considering putting in new speakers in my door. were there amps on those speakers? a diy would be great!!!!!

The w124 is a different animal - different size speakers, different mounting techniques, etc. The C 230/w202 has a Head unit with no internal amplification, tweeters in the dash, 5 1/2" speakers in front and back doors, and 'woofer' array in the rear deck, running from a trunk mounted amp. The w124 had at least 2 evolutions of how they did the stereos between 1986 and 1995. The earliest version is detailed in the 'DIY' tab at the top of the page. The later versions are discussed in the archives.

The good news on the w202 is that there is enough space to make a standard size speaker work without having to cut sheet metal or pull the door panel. the bad news is that there is a fair amount of plastic trimming to be done specific to each speaker brand. A Neodymium magnet speaker may not need much trimming (small magnet), while a large diameter deep magnet speaker requires a dremel tool to remove part of the plastic basket in the door behind the speaker.

I got the photos back, and I will start scanning and writing this weekend to get something ready to send on to Bill Wood for a DIY (Except saturday, which is the Mequiar's detailing day Placo1 organized!!!)

Bill Wood posted the article in the DIY section today. Hope it helps! (The sound improvement from just these 2 speakers is unbelievable) :D
