Sick Idea For Sub location in a 300E.
 

Hello Board, My mind came up with yet another sick idea. How about putting a 10 inch sub behind both the driver and passenger seats(where those silly nets are located)?? The seat backing is firm, easy to remove and easy to cut. Imaging a 10 inch woofer behind the seat. Is that possible? How about the sound quality?

I think a better place, and one that I'm considering, is where your back seat's arm rest folds up into the seat. You could fit either a 6" or 8" sub there, easily.

If you did this, you would need a "free air" sub, and I don't think sound quality will be worth the effort and looks when finished. My 2 cents.

Please do not be offended by my opinion since I too think it is a cool idea, but I doubt it will perform correctly.

Think about the back massage you could get out of that setup!!:p And rear seat passengers would get a knee massage!:D

If you're looking for thump then put a bass shaker under the front seats. You'll feel it then. :-)

Certainly it matters how tall your rear passengers are, but I've never had a problem yet.

Has anyone ever considered the space underneath the rear seats just behind the calf of a sitting passenger? I've always wondered about that area.

While you could pro'lly move them, there's wiring in my car there. Definitely an idea worth looking into though,

I really doubt this would work. Remove the seatback and you'll see. The rails that the headrest slides into are in the way, and there isn't enough depth for an MDF enclosure, unless you want the seatback to stick out half a foot! Additionally, the seatback is "friction clipped" into the channels on the side of the seat and I don't think that can handle the vibration from the subwoofer.

If you want max bass in a 124, you need to make a custom 4th order bandpass enclosure in the trunk, and run the ports through the rear deck, sealing everything up properly so ALL the air movement is directed into the passenger compartment. The other option is to tear out the rear metal shelf and make a huge baffle in place of the stock shelf, and fill it with four 10's or 12's in a free-air setup. This would be extremely difficult and expensive, and may not be any better than the 4th order box anyway...

You could possibly try to install the sub at the FRONT of the seat. I've seen two installs that did this. The first one was a custom enclosure, but I don't remember the particulars of the install. The other was for one of the editors of the former Car Stereo Review. He had a Toyota RAV4 with a JL enclosure. I think it was the 8.1 Microsub.

Have a custom box built for the passenger footwell. A 10" JL will fit nicely and you get up front bass. Sure you lose 5" of legroom, but there's a fair amount to start with.
