Help with a Volvo
I know it is not a Mercedes issue but I am sure someone can help. I bought a CD receiver for my sister's Volvo, 1994 940 turbo wagon and I am not sure how to wire it. Circuit City does not carry the wiring harness for it. The original receiver has two connectors. One has about 12 pins and the other which is marked "amp" and has about 5 pins, round.

www.crutchfield.com sells a harness for this application that bypasses the amplifier. Give em a call. 1-888-955-6000

I think Crutchfield sells the 12 pin connector. Remove that POS amp from under the steering column and cut off the connector. Crimp on the bullet connectors for the rear speakers and plug everything in.
I had a SONY CD Xplode radio on my old 740T that I wired in like that. Pretty easy. I also added Radio Shack Piezo tweeters by the mirrors. It really improved the sound. |

What a dedication!!!! Thanks. I bought the wiring kit from Crutchfield but the ends don't look right. I am installing it on Thursday night for my sister. I think this will help.
Thanks. |
installdoctor.com iirc has a comprehensive page
or brickboard.com if its the same as mine - its a pig (bear ?) of a job... amp is permenantly wired in - and has to be bypassed. amp (UK) is under dash next to steering collomn. about 4 - 5" square 1" thick. 1996 cl420 1992 940 turbo etc... |
Do I just leave the amp in there with the wire hanging?

Amp Question
If the stereo you are installing has RCA's on it you might want to adapt a set of RCA's to the 6 pin din connector. Thus no bypassing would be required. You would just be using the factory systems wiring layout.

wiring
I am stuck. I took the stereo out and it has one long connector with 14 pins and a 6 pin amp connector. The wiring kit I bought is the same as your diagram but it is not the right one. I think I will use RCA to 6 pins. Is that something that I can buy?
If that is the case, I may just do it w/o the wiring kit. Thanks for your help. |

Here is a pic of my radio from my 1986 740T.

Nope, that is not it. I have 14 pin (7 each row) black connector and 6 pin round amp connector.
|
I spoke to Crutchfield today and the wiring kit is a amp by pass kit and I just need to connect it at the amp to the radio. I am gone for two weeks but when I am back, I will try it.
Thanks for all your help. |

I am going to get to it this weekend sometime. Did your wiring harness have two connectors? Did you have to run extra wires for extention to the amp?
|
yes two connectors, one goes all the way to the factory amp, you amplug the amp and plug the amp harness into the aftermarket connector, run the wires back and connect the apropriate ones to the aftermarke HU harness, the second harness plugs into the harness that was originally plugged into the factory head... hope this is clear expect job to take quite a while.... be careful not to blow any fuses.... disconnecting batter when wiring stereo is a good idea... good luck
