Delphi Sky-Fi in a W124

Looking for pics of installs or tips on installing a Delphi Sky-Fi into a W124.

A friend of mine received the SkyFi for a gift, and he doesn't have anyone to install it. I've done a few Car Audio installs before and I can probably do it, but installing a new head unit in my friends W126 turned out to be a major headache. I'm hoping the W124 won't be as much of a pain. I believe he's got a mid 90's E320.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

you need the fm modulator, an antenna, and the car kit adapter. the delphi unit is also big, and not easy to find a place to mount it.

If you want to add xm more easily, I recommend a smaller unit liek the xm commander for its size. you can mount the antenna inside the car too, in the center of the dash against the windshield, works pretty good in that location.

You can put the control unit above the rear view mirror, works well in that location too.

The stock mount that comes with the car kit isn't up to the task and doesn't offer many mounting options in a w124. I bought this mount from crutchfield. You can see the remains of the stock mount above the climate control buttons. The stock mount broke soon after I mounted it to the dash. Now the damn thing is permantly stuck to the dash. How do I get that thing off of there?

My current setup does look intrusive (certainly not a "clean install") but it is very functional while driving. At some point I'm going to buy the new Alpine unit with the XM tuner built in (rather than "XM ready"). But for now this work fine.

i mounted my wifes in a similar way with a 15 inch flex
mount. the head unit ended up in about the same position,
with the flex stalk mounted on the trans tunnel side carpet
just under the footwell vent. i cut an old oe cd bracket to act
as a backing plate for support.

you should be able to gently peal off the mount, check your
xm install instructions. may need some gentle heat from a hairdryer.

isn't xm cool, i love to call my local X station and ask them if i
could request some fred.

I have the pioneer 903 XM Unit, and mounted it on the headliner in front of the rear view mirror where the factory cellphone controls used to be.

Am waiting on my new radio, and xm will be pumped direct through the new radio.

The delphi unit is just too big in my opinion.

the ashtray generally remains closed. wouldnt that be a nice place to mount that?
