is this a paint job for novice

Front left frame.

I guess there is a lot of rust beneath the plastic.

Do you think a novice can remove and reinstall the plastic?

I'm assuming that you are talking about the threshold. The plastic threshold just pulls off. It is stuck on with some clips. Start at one end and using a good strong putty knife or large screw driver, gently pry upwards on it. You'll feel the clips release one at a time as you move toward the other end. Once you start you'll see what I mean. Just take your time and work under the area that is held by the next clip...don't try to pull the whole thing up from one end.

Once you have it up, clean the rust off as best you can with your putty knife. Then get some POR-15 Paint. Accept no substitutes. Follow the directions with the paint exactly.

Then put the threshold back on once the paint is dry. (Just beat it on with the heel of your hand. this will give you great satisfaction. ) You won't have to worry about that area again.

Thank you.

I do not know what is called threshold here.

At the botton of the picture (the outer most part of the car), there is white plastic.
Right on the edge of the white plastic, you will see two red~brown spots.
My guess is the rust area extends to beneath the white plastic.

I do not mean the extruded part (silver and gray).

OK. The gray/silver extruded piece is the threshold. You will probably need to take it off anyway to get at the area under the white plastic. Also the rust stain may be coming from your door. Take a look under there.

Regardless, once you've found the rust, use the POR-15 to seal it.

dakota,

When I remove the threshold, are there holes through which I can spray rustproof material?

Should I insert the wedge below the wider plane (with metal strip)?
