I was also told that they are working on a micro product that can be used for polishing and we should expect to see them on the market in the coming year.
WOW! That sounds plausible. Since the towels are so good at removing stuff on glass they will also remove the wax once applied. Maybe one has to apply two coats of wax or lightly buff with the cloths.

It's interesting that Griot's Garage sells microfiber cloths specifically for removing wax residue. Seems to me that a layer of wax would chemically bond to the paint and that normal mechanical wax removal (i.e. with a cloth, microfiber or cotton) would leave that layer alone.

I have submitted this as a question to Griot's and will let you know what they say. They have been very helpful when I've asked them specific detailing questions in the past.

I Thought So, Too

I, too, had wondered about using micro fiber cloth for wax removal and was surprised to see that some here warned against it. Griot's Garage specifcally sells theirs for wax removal, and I know that Richard Griot is an absolute nut about car care. It would surprise me that they would not work as he advertises, so please let us know the results of your email to them.

Costco?

I looked at Costco for microfiber towels, and suprisingly found them in the cleaning supply area and not with auto products.
They did carry a nice bag of cotton rags, very well priced.

I was concerned the towels offered had a binding of nylon that looked like it might be dangerous to use on the car.

I did find some nice expensive towels at one of the car parts stores, so I thought I would try them.

I am amazed at how well they clean glass!!! Awesome!

Thanks for the tip.

Feedback from Griot's Garage

I did get an email back from Griot's Garage to say that their microfiber cloths will NOT remove excess wax, only the hazed-over residue. They do say that the material they use in their cloths is the finest (i.e. smallest diameter) available; I don't know if other microfiber cloths might be different.

It would be interesting to do a little research project, like I did when I wanted to compare the longevity of Zaino polish to carnauba wax. One could apply their favorite wax or polish to their trunk lid, and buff off half with a terrycloth towel as usual and the other side with a micro fiber cloth, and see how long they each bead up.

I too contacted Griots Gararge only by phone and spoke to Tom, who said NOT to use the microfiber for polishing and when I explained about the manufactor of the cloths saying NOT to use them for removing wax as they defeat the purpose of the wax, he said "we only use the finest and have found them to work for us" .

micro fiber cloths

I have used them successfully to remove the residue of Maguires Gold Class paste wax with excellent results. I figure if they are soft enough not to scratch paint, they probably won't remove very much wax either.

Zymol and Meguiars recommend microfibre cloths for buffing up wax. They've always worked well for me, too. They seem to do the same thing as regular cotton cloths, with much less effort. You don't think buffing with regular cotton cloths strips the wax, do you?

I found you must be careful with microfiber. The stitching around the edges of some products can be abrasive. It may also be a good idea to remove the label if it has one. Finally wash only in warm water with a non perfumed/bleach detergent.

I have had success using these with both the Zymol Carbon and Maguires Gold stuff.

I bought 2 from Bavarian Autosport last year and they are the best for removing wax and doing windows. Also work amazing on glasses, better than the cleaning cloth that comes from the Sunglass hut. They are the only things that dont smear the lenses. Little $$ but I can bet they are going to work better than something at Wal-Mart

I purchased the 5 pack from WalMart and they seem to leave fibers on the windows. I even washed them and tried again and still some fibers on the windows. Quality must not be as good.

I've tried MF towels from various sources ... Kragens, PepBoys, Costco and Griot's. I will say that though the Griot's towels are more expensive, they are a better towel. They are thicker, more absorbant and wash up better as well. Also, the Griot's MF towels tend not to snag as often.

I use MF towels to dust, clean and shine. I use a combination of Griot's, Meguiar's and S100 products. To polish and wax my cars, I use the Porter Cable Random Obital with either Griot's or Meguiar's pads. To remove the wax, I use MF towels ... Griot's only, followed up with Griot's 100% cotton towels to bring out the shine. Daily care is using Meguiars Final Detail and the Griot's MF towel ... bella machina!

i think norman has described the most thoughtful approach.
its not so much the product as the the proper application and use.

example: i have some meguiars "yellow wax" straight carnuba wax that i am sure is a GREAT product. but i tried to use it by hand application, and the result is terrible. had to strip it off and go back to a consumer grade product that would produce an acceptable result without the use of a PCRO.

so... i think an understanding of where and when to utilize the MF products is the KEY to successful results, and that finding the right "price-point" MF towel for intended surface has great potential for faster cleanup and even bigger smiles!

CAUTION: i STRONGLY advise washing your MF products seperately from ANY other items, and follow the manuf suggestions for detergents and drying. i generally hang mine to dry.

I bought the yellow ones at CostCo and was very impressed. I just used it on a '91 Acura with oem clearcoat that is showing its age. I was having trouble removing Meguires #7 with common terrycloth so I tried the MF, it easily cut my work in half. Ditto on the Meguires #26 I applied next. On my GFs '99 BMW it made the same process almost pleasurable.

Now what to do with my two huge bulk packs of now outdated terry towels...
