Questions about W210 dash wrapping process.

The Dashboard in my S210 2000 E320 has a few cracks. The crack around airbag is pretty big. I tried to fix it couple of years ago, but unfortunately it appears again and also new cracks appear (around vent holes).

I would like to wrap the dash with Alcantara©. Only one big question: how do I have to implement the airbag insert?
I’m going to sew parts with 2.5mm stitch (silk threads). I’ve seen those stitches on leather dashboard in new GL-450 and I’m guessing that it will be Ok for airbag releasing process.
What are you thinking about it?
Unfortunately I couldn’t find examples with 210 upholstered dashboard picture. If someone has it then could you please let me know where can I see it?

Thanks

Probably every 210 dash has the same cracks. As long as you don't interfere with the rip-seam itself, airbag deployment should still be OK, but that's just an opinion.

W210 Dash Replacement

This looks like a good potential solution. Did you ever proceed with this project and, if so, could you share pictures and relevant experiences?

I just bought a low mile 1998 E300td that has a couple very minor cracks, that will probably worsen despite my parking indoors nearly all the time. I have considered buying a replacement dash, but suspect the replacement would have a limited lifespan as well since Mercedes appears to lack any expertise in dashboards. I am also concerned that replacing the dash would require alot of disturbance to the wiring, which it seems is another potential weak point in these cars.

As a side note, my 3 older, high mileage Toyotas have zero cracks--a major feat living in Colorado. All are still soft and supple--one is 30 years old.
