380SL: Thief cut into glove box :(

Hello!

I just acquired a 1984 380SL...and within the first week of ownership, it was broken into...argh. (I live in Chicago, it was a fine neighborhood, I'm still a bit in shock)

Fortunately, the only damage is a deep cut in the door of the glove compartment. Looks like the guy tried to jimmy open the compartment with a switchblade and slipped. I wish he had just tried opening the compartment first, it wasn't locked.

Anyway, he took off with my manuals and some maps...but nothing else. So I'm hoping some of you might be able to assist this novice owner:

1) How do I go about finding replacement manuals?
2) Should I take the car into a body shop to have the rip repaired, it's pretty deep. Or should I just look into replacing the part? I'd rather not, as everything in that car is still original...even so, I tried looking for the part and I can't find it.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

best,
Carolyn

Wow that's terrible, I'm sorry to hear that story.

I'm sure you can find a glove box door around here somewhere, there's as good a chance as any that someone here is parting out a car like that.

As for having it repaird, sorry I'm not help there. I don't know anything about that sort of repair.

Thanks irish, at least a deer didn't fall on it. I tried searching a few part catalogs...still can't find anything. I look under the interior trim section and nothing there seems like the right part? Is there another term for "glove compartment"?

Carolyn

Manuals can be found on ebay and reprints can be purchased from Mercedes Benz Classic Website.

Your best bet is to source a replacement glove box door on Ebay. If you want to get the wood repaired, google Heritage Woodworks.

Carolyn, your local MB dealer should be able to provide a replacement Owner's Manual. Ask the dealer about the glove box door also, or check a local salvage yard.

That really sucks. I can't imagine why anyone would steal something like that.
