W123 Sunvisor Replacements

I would like to replace the shapeless and formless sunvisors on my 1981 300D, but new replacements don't seem to be found anywhere. Old sunvisors seem to look worse than mine do.

The W124 sunvisors seem to look very close. Does anyone think that they would fit and look OK in a W123?

Any other ideas? Thanks.

im restoring my w115 interior. my idea was to cut the stiching on the side, and put foam inside, then sew back up the outside. probably be the cheapest, and you can get foam at any fabric store or arts and crafts store. 124 visors would prolly fit too, if you found a good color match, or else ud have to dye it.

W124 Visors

I bought some used W124 visors, from the pictures they sure look like a fit. I will post how it goes after I get them and attempt the installation.

w124 do not fit, nor do w126 or w116. Good sunvisors at the junkyards are hard to come by.

Thats an option we did on the 115 we had it actually looks great. Find a good upholstery shop to do it. We did it before i found replacements for it.
The old was all dusty, crushed foam inside..

Look for some late 80's lighted visors they are usually in better shape than the early ones..

No question the W124 visors won't work.

From the outside dimensions they are almost exactly the same size. The mounting flange (post 1981) has a smaller mounting circumference, then finally the length to the visor rod to the plastic clamp is much longer.

Looks like the only solution is to completely rebuild them or find an aftermarket replacement.

Would it be possible to somehow get some expanding foam in with a syringe or something? I have been pondering this for a while now, it would sure look a lot better but would it work?

I was thinking of the exact same thing. But you would need to have a physical mold of some kind pressed around the visor to help maintain the original shape. A lot of work perhaps.

It seems that this disintegrating visor foam is only an issue until 1981. Looking at the visors after 81, they seem to be made the same as the visors used on the W124 platform. Even the mounting bracket changes to the W124 style in 82.

Interesting thought, let me know if you move forward with it.

Regards,
William

Newer lighted mirror style tend to get worse because the mirror falls out and is nearly impossible to reattach.

The dealer was able to source the drivers side (in blue) at least, so I ordered one. Most of the other colors were available including black a cream color for both driver and passenger sides.

I wonder about dying the vinyl of the cream to match the blue interior color?

I've had great luck painting vinyls. The key is to wash it with a light solvent first to remove ALL oils / contaminates. Then hitting them with the proper primer and vinyl paint. Standard spray paint won't flex and will flake off.
