Spray dye for 174 Palomino leather, vinyl, plastic

Hi all
As plastic parts age and become brittle color correct replacements are getting harder to find, so you may be forced to dye a suitable replacement to match your interior.

The MB 174 palomino that my interior has is a hard color to match, at least in rattle can form. SEM Palomino 15323 is far too light, and the SEM camel is good for the carpeting but too dark for plastic and vinyl trim.

I just tried Brillo color spray 040 Bark -Ecorce and it is a near perfect match. It is commonly available online, used primarily for shoe recoloring but is good for leather, vinyl and plastic. It lays smooth and has a semi-gloss finish, perfect for auto trim. Usually available in 4.5 oz spray cans, but larger sizes are available. Might suit your needs.

In the picture the bottom is SEM Palomino, the middle is MB original 174, the top is the Brillo 040 Bark for reference

Thank you for the tip!

In the past I've had to rely on lightly top coating the Camel SEM over the Palomino SEM while the paint was still wet. Results were pretty "iffy" and usually took a couple of tries to get the match "right". It was super tough when only doing a single piece of a panel/door. What looked good wet didn't always jive when dry.

Good tip. A company named Color Plus in Milford PA makes an exact match dye for all Mercedes interior colors. They have a website.

some better examples of tge color match

I've expanded the use of the Brillo spray from just plastic trim to seats. Freshening the Pinkomino in the rear of the 300td by spraying the seating surfaces most pinkominoed, with the Brillo bark spray and would say its s 98% match to the factory 174 Palomino on the seats.

Have a look at the pics below for reference. The seat bottom was only sprayed on the top seating surface. The piping and lower are original MB, albeit with very little fading. The headrest cover is New Palomino, factory correct, vs the sprayed seat bottom. Pretty darn close

Wow that looks great! I've got the same problem with the B pillar foot trim on one side and was going to replace them with black ones...

Cool that it looks good on the seats. Did you prep the MB Tex in any way?

Thanks h3ffe
The first driver for me to get this going was also by replacing broken chipped B-pillar lowers (very first pic in first post)and having to spray those to match.

As far as prep, since this stuff is designed for leather, vinyl and plastic, it already has bonding agents mixed in, no special primer is needed, but you should thoroughly clean the surface to remove all dirt grease and grime. prior to recoloring. That's pretty much it. Dries to the touch in about a minute and can be handled after about 15 min of drying time.

Very hard for me to get in Canada, even though the stuff is made here. Probably get it in China more easily.

Color Plus is located in Milford, PA, and sells an excellent spray on or brush on dye for leather or MB tex which is an exact color match and very durable. Highly recommended.
