Unhappy discoloured gear shift knob

I have a C180 1994 Elegance auto and the gearshift knob which is leather covered has lost some of its beige colour and the leather under is exposed which turns black quickly from dirt and hand sweat. How can I recolour it? Is it ok to buy shoe dye from the shoeshop and use this? How will it stand against direct Summer sunshine? We get up to 43 degrees Celcius for about 4 days every year at the tail end of our Summer in February and its really hot. Rest of Summer its more like 33 degrees and in the enclosed car this increases to much higher.

Buy a new one from EBAY. You can get Burlwood for like $15 but the better quality knobs hits $60. MB doesnt use dyes. I suspect, it will rub of on your hands.
